Winter Is Not The End: A Gallery by @Schwarzesauge

A strong theme can be a great creative jumpstart when you want to shoot or compile pictures into one cohesive project. It doesn’t matter if the whole project is shot on one roll of film or if the photos come from many different moments of your life, when there is a central theme you can find a way to bring everything together. Lomographer @Schwarzesauge photographs a long Austrian winter in this gallery titled Winter Is Not The End, using a variety of analogue cameras and film. Despite this, each photo seems fit beside one another. Shot during the Covid19 pandemic, he hopes these photos transmit glimmers of hope.

A collection of photographs portraying landscapes, portraits, and nature tells a story of winter during a time that seemed bleak to the photographer. Amidst all the negative things happening in the world, he wanted to create an album that focused more on life. His photographs of flowers growing despite the cold conditions, the distant yet intimate photos of his subjects conversing together, and the warm sunsets that he captured all illustrate his vision.

The photos were mainly shot in the winter of 2021 and 2022. These times were overshadowed by the coronavirus crisis. Both, have the same outcome. The outside world is becoming much less busy, and more silent. Both are also connected with illness and death. So I have chosen these pictures which transport the message of hope.

For @Schwarzesauge these years were a much slower time and it allowed him to think and ponder on his photography. It gave him much more clarity and allowed him to put together work from different eras in order to come up with a more cohesive body of work. Despite his equipment not being the same, ranging from unique cameras like the Horizon Kompakt mixed with expired film, to simpler cameras like an old point-and-shoot, and a Canon EOS, you can tell that the message is much more important than the gear used.

Generally, as the world slows down, you can take more time. You can arrange a photo in a more sophisticated way.

Shooting in winter can be quite challenging as extreme temperatures can affect the camera's performance and exposure settings. Additionally, getting the right exposure can be tricky due to the presence of snow. However, the photographer's skillful use of both color, and black and white film has resulted in stunning photographs. Despite the somber and melancholic nature of the season, each photo conveys a sense of hope for brighter days ahead and remind us that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Shooting outside, the light is the most interesting aspect. The sun comes out much more irregularly. But when it comes out, it gives more interesting effects. It's not that high as in summer, so it makes way for more dramatic shadows.

We thank @Schwarzesauge for this bright and hopeful album. Be sure to check out more of his work on his LomoHome. What themes do you want to be shooting in the coming weeks? Comment down below and share with the rest of the community!
