St. James The Great Anglican Church, Riccarton

Christchurch: Churches is an ongoing project, that aims to document the spiritualscape of an austral, christian, colonial city, tautological both by its name and by its architecture. Born and raised in Europe, in a strongly atheist family, I've never really put my focus on the sometimes thousand-year-old stones that stack up in the centre of our cities, now only gathering families of the newly married or dead, or tourists watching through their telephones the now-gone era of Church in Europe. At the antipodes, Christchurch has suffered a lot from the rather recent earthquakes, and strives for repair; nonetheless most of the churches take place in cheap, concrete, almost feature- and history-less buildings. The variety of architectures dedicated to the Holy - from the late 1800s to modern - really impressed me and continues to do so.
