This place is called a marae and can be defined as the most sacred place of the traditionnal polynesian culture and religion. They had an essential religious and political function in the polynesian society, and all important ceremonies of the traditional polynesian life found place on this marae.The marae of Taputapuatea on Raiatea island is dated from around the year 1000 AD and is the oldest one of this kind in Polynesia. That's why the island of Raiatea is called the "sacred island" because it is said to be the very first island to have establish the polynesian culture and place of birth of the polynesian gods. There are of course other marae's on Raiatea and on all of the other polynesian islands, but this one is the oldest and biggest on of all the polynesian area.
