week 38: geometric scratches

4

a while ago lostlittlekid asked me if i would like to do a filmswap with him and yes, of course, i wanted to :)

since we both like to shoot selfportraits with masks or other things in front of our face, we decided to do something similar for our swap. one part of our swap were doubles with a color negative film, that will be posted at his lomohome soon. the other roll was a black and white film, and that’s the one i’m going to tell you about:

i had the plan to shoot some pictures with shapes and geometrical patterns in it and later scratch matching shapes out of the negatives for quite a while. and so we decided to do this for one part of our swap. first we both shot pictures of ourselves with shapes in front of our faces with the la sardina, then it was my turn to mess around with the developed negatives.

i have scratched and destroyed my negatives before (see here: aesthetic of destruction or here: ghosts ) but never with a “geometric shapes” concept.
also i never did the scratch thing with 35mm film before, so far i only scratched 120 roll film. it’s a bit more tricky with 35mm film, since the negatives are so small but apart from that it works just fine.

i followed the concept for most of the roll, but i also tried some new ways of “destroying” :)

this is what you get, when you crumple up the negative:

these pictures were scratched first and then painted on with watercolor (naturally i had to scan them as color negatives to see the color, so the photos are sepia toned):

another possibility is to spray black lacquer onto the negatives:

or you can prick them with a needle:

you can check out all the pictures from our swap here: geometric scratches

thanks lostlittlekid for the swap, it was so much fun! :)

UPDATE
the other part of our swap is now online too! panoramic version and cropped version – have a look! the photos are awesome :D
