The Real Atlantis
Villa Epecuén was established in the 1920s by a handful of settlers and rapidly expanded in size thanks to the popularity of the therapeutic waters of the Lago Epecuén, a salt lake some 600 kilometers southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At its peak the town would cater for over 20,000 visitors annually, between November and March. In 1985, the salty waters broke through an earthen dam, and Villa Epecuen was doomed. A slow-growing flood consumed the town until it reached a depth of 10 meters (33 feet) in 1993. People lost everything and had to started over a new life again.
