Stand Development with LC29 and HC-110

Stand development is an easy and economical way to develop your own black and white negatives. Read on to learn how!

What is Stand development?

Stand development is a development method for black and white negatives that involves two key elements:

1. It uses an extremely diluted developer. Not all developers work in the stand process — the most well known practitioners of this approach is Rodinal. However, Kodak HC110 and Ilford LC29 also yield amazing results. Other traditional developers (D-76, ID-11, T-Max, etc) don’t work in stand development.

2. It is a very long development process with very little agitation.

There are quite a few tutorials already on the Lomography website that will teach you the basics of Black and White Development and Stand Development with Rodinal, so I will simply give you the basic dilutions and methods for the other developers.

Kodak HC-110

1. Pre soak film for 5 mins in water at 20C.
2. HC-110 dilution G (syrup 1:119) aiming for 720 mL of liquid working solution.
3. 30 seconds initial gentle agitation then leave untouched for 60 minutes.
4. Use 20C water as a stop bath.
5. Fix as normal for 5 mins.
6. Dry and look at results!

Ilford LC29

1. Pre soak film for 5 mins in water at 20C.
2. 6ml LC29 and water aiming for 500ml of liquid solution.
3. 30 seconds initial gentle agitation then leave untouched for 30 minutes, at 30 minutes another gentle agitation and then leave for another 30 minutes.
4. Use 20C water as a stop bath.
5. Fix as normal for 5 mins.
6. Dry and look at results!
