Tons of Thread with LomoKino LomoAmigo Matt Skwid

We have seen and were astonished with his LomoKino film that showcased a heap of threads, crawling and making their way through a person.

It was brilliant and we sure were blown away by the creativity and the effort put into it! With that great effect, we just had to make him our LomoKino LomoAmigo. And we’re pretty sure you’re in for a good one for there’s more to come from him! Get to know this budding director by reading our interview with him below.

Number of years in the Community: Just a few months! Where have you been all my life?

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?

I’m just a silly Canadian living in Toronto and working on my photo/video projects during time off from my day job as a VFX coordinator for a TV show. Eventually, I plan to direct music videos and commercials full time. I like simple stuff like good coffee, Tiger Tail ice cream, wavy lakes, lazy walks, and skateboarding down a smooth side street.

How did you start on Lomography? Have you been doing film photography, too?

The LomoKino really got me into Lomograhy. I have been shooting some other movie film formats and wasn’t loving the process and the costs so I jumped at the chance for something more accessible that could offer similar results for less investment.

How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?

It was a unique experience. I primarily work in digital so I had to get used to not seeing what I was shooting. It became very liberating and forced me to trust my instincts and to move on.

Who or what has inspired you to purchase and use the LomoKino?

I got the LomoKino specifically to shoot Long Spun Thread.

And yes, your LomoKino music video “Long Spun Thread” was really nice! Can you tell us something about it?

The artist featured is Gabe Levine who is a local Toronto musician and a personal friend. I shot 21 rolls and cropped every single frame by hand. It was a very labour intensive project to say the least. The entire video took over 100 hrs to complete. Fortunately, it has been well received and worth the effort. It was recently screened at the “2013 Sprockets Music Video Festival” and will soon be screening in Poland at the ARS Independent IFF.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had while doing the film and while using the LomoKino?

The LomoKino attracts a lot of curious onlookers. Every time I was out shooting with it, at least a couple people would approach me to ask questions or to talk photography with me. Is that strange?

If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LomoKino, who would it be and why?

Probably Charlie Chaplin. I’m sure he would appreciate the little camera and I know that he would give a solid performance.

Any future plans with your LomoKino? More shoots or a full-length film perhaps? We’d love to know more about your future projects!

Well you already know that I’d love to shoot something specifically for Lomography. Perhaps the LomoKino 2 commercial if that ever happens. I also have a few other ideas in the mix. Stay tuned!

Your advice to future LomoKino users.

Take your time with the concept. Use a light meter. Carry a variety of film. I also prefer to shoot slower moving objects to avoid a ‘herky-jerky’ look, but that’s just me. Just have fun and trust your guts.
