Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?

I am a 20 year old uni student who lives in a church with some friends in Hobart, Tasmania. I’m in my third year studying medicine which keeps me busy, but I take any opportunity to get out there with my cameras including of course the LomoKino. You won’t see many pictures from my time in Medicine due to privacy reasons, so many of my photos show the part of my life where I have a bit more time to have fun! I love to see a good band or just go to the beach in summer with my closest mates.

How long have you been a Lomographer and how did you find out about the Community?

I got my first Lomographic camera, a Holga 120CFN, as a Christmas gift in 2008. I had no idea what Lomography was or what it was all about, but I soon fell in love with analogue photography and discovered this great Community in early 2009. I love how people are always friendly and have heaps of tips and tricks to share.

Describe the LomoKino in five words.

Click, click, click, click, click

How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?

I find it works best with people or creatures that you know will move and surprise you. With a bit of practice I have been trying to take movies with fewer, longer shots so that the viewer can more easily take the subject in. If there is little excitement while I’m turning the handle I will make something happen by saying “quick, do something!” which usually works.

Quick Do Something!

What or who has inspired you to purchase and use the LomoKino?

My wonderful friends are my inspiration and my favorite subjects.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had with it?

People mainly give me funny looks because they are unsure what the little black ticking box is for. I’m sure, however, that these puzzled looks are nothing new for us Lomographers!

If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LomoKino, who would it be and why?

I would have loved to film my grandfather, who passed away four years ago. He was an occasional film photographer and was always fascinated by machines and gadgets. He would have liked to see how the camera worked, but as a quiet person may have been reluctant to be the subject in a movie. His old Ricoh XR-1s SLR, which he gave me, is one of my most used cameras.

Kindly share to us any LomoKino movie you love the most.

I hope to take many more movies with my LomoKino, but my favorite one to date is this:

Swings

Any future plans with your LomoKino? More shoots or a full-length film perhaps?

Many more shoots, definitely! A full length film may take a while to film and even longer to scan, but you never know! I’m only just starting with this little camera.

Your advice to future LomoKino users.

If you scan your own negatives for your movies, make use of mandi’s great little program “AutoKino” which crops your frames and puts the movie together for you. It has already saved me hours of tinkering on the computer, giving me more time to shoot. Other than that, just have fun and try to keep the camera steady when you’re turning that crank!
