LomoAmigo Ed Glazar Shoots with the Lomo LC-A+

Armed with his bike and his Lomo LC-A+, Bike Enthusiast Ed Glazar takes us on a wild ride around NYC. As he takes his camera around the city, he gives us a new perspective on the city we’ve grown to love.

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing)?
I’ve owned a Holga for and a Lomo fisheye for many years. I got my hands on the LC-A+ about a year ago (THANKS LOMOGRAPHY!). I’ve got my eye on the Sprocket Rocket now. I have a fridge full of expired film I acquired from a newspaper I worked at 5 years ago. Is this an answer?

Describe the LC-A+ in five words.

What is your favorite bike route in New York City?
I love riding anywhere off the beaten path, which isn’t exactly easy to do in NYC these days. My favorite place to ride and explore right now is the 9 mile cemetery belt that runs through Queens and Brooklyn. It’s almost as long as Manhattan! The number dead triples the number of living in Queens. The cemeteries are full of history and the surrounding scenery creates an irony that it lends itself to photographs.

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph and why.
I’d love to travel back in time to photograph Evel Knevil through out his career. He was a bad ass. The epitome of extreme sports. He popped pills and washed them down with Wild Turkey. He broke 35 bones in his body through out his career and had 14 surgeries. He became one of the best known celebrities in the world by living in the margins. If all that doesn’t speak black and white photo documentary, then I don’t know what does.

What specific training do you do to prepare yourself for a cycling tour?
I don’t do any physical training aside from riding almost every day. I’ve never done the math but I probably average about 20 miles a day. I recently started working with a physical therapist too, hoping to undo damage done by years of riding bikes and drinking beer. Not always at the same time.

Where in New York City are some of the most underrated places a biker rides to and take amazing analogue shots?
The industrial fringes of neighborhoods in the outer boroughs are where it’s at. They are desolate at night and you never know what you’ll see. Years ago, I pedaled past a twenty foot boat, tied to a fire hydrant, listing slightly, it’s hull resting on Kingsland Avenue. Yes, it was one of those times I wished I had my camera.

If you could bike to anywhere in the world and document the trip with the LC-A+ camera, where would you head?
Right now, I’d have to say Appalachia. An autumn ride through the Smokey Mountains would be grueling, but beautiful. And I’m thinking interactions with people could go from mundane to frightening. That’s how I like it.

Has anything ever happened in a race or ride where you thought to yourself, Damn, I wish I had my camera?!
Happens every time I don’t have a camera. And sometimes when I do. Missed photo opportunities are what brought me to be a photographer. I’d been riding all over NYC as a messenger for years, living and breathing everything the city had to offer at street level. When I realized that all my memories were carefully composed images, I picked up a camera so I could begin to share them.

Your advice to future LC-A+ shooters is..
Never, ever stop shooting film. When you think, I should use my DSLR for this, bring your LC-A+ instead.

What can we expect next from you?
The relentless grind of NYC is beginning to wear me down, so it’s time to change gears. I’m going fishing! Seriously. I’m moving to Idaho. A short drive from Silver Creek—a legendary trout stream I’ve wanted to fish since I was a kid. A couple hours south of where Ernest Hemingway is buried. I’ll be purposely unemployed for a while. Photo subject matter has yet to be discovered but I’m thinking landscapes, small town speedways and base jumpers. I’ll be setting up a darkroom in my basement, so you can expect me to get even more analogue.
