LomoGuru of the Week: Fayeusokoi

10

Her local Community is familiar of her cheery disposition which amazingly equates to her wonderful Lomographs! She’s from Malaysia but she’s pretty known in the international Community, too!

She has a lot in her plate but she never misses to take a Lomograph or two every once in a while. She’s a fan of many things and fun fact here, her name is not what you think it is. Faye? Nope, she’s not Faye!

Well, the curiousity’s getting bigger so before we all get crazy, let’s throw some confetti for this week’s LomoGuru, fayeusokoi!

Tell us something about yourself… What do you do for a living? What are your main interests?

My name is Suat Khee or you can call me Faye. I work as a graphic designer. I am an ordinary girl who loves eating, baking, traveling, recently has just started running. Becoming a Lomographer made me a bit different with others. And I think I have done a great job when it comes to Lomography. Just like what my friend told me, “when I talk about Lomo, I think about you.” What a big “achievement”!

Please tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

Everyone has been interested about my LomoHome’s name which is fayeusokoi. I used to be active in several forums before I had a LomoHome. “Faye” is because I love Faye Wong – an artist, singer, and movie star from Hong Kong. At first, I wanted to use Faye Yeoh or whatever with Daye as my ID but it was all unavailable. So I just grabbed a Japanese series DVD on my desk and typed the word “usokoi” which I saw at that moment. And when people ask me how to pronounce my name, I say “Ermm… You can just call me Faye.” Yet until today, I still don’t know what “usokoi” means. It’s funny!

Some Community favourites.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

I have uploaded some photos in my LomoHome eversince I started my Lomography journey though I am not really active in the international Lomographic Community until the Lomography Malaysia page was launched. There we had our first rumble in which I have won my first ever prize from Lomography. And when great things happen, it can’t stop. From then I have been chosen LomoHome of the Week, LomoHome of the Day, Photo of the Day and have alson won two Diana F+ cameras and lots of Piggies from other rumbles and competitions. I have to say big big big thanks to Lomography. I have a really great time and lots of memorable experience here!

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

Yes, some of the people in the Community are my friends! They are ewen, vanilajan, amikamerami, ahleng90, ah_sher, boonhow, cheehoe, fendyfazeli, iammiuu and many more. We have known each other in a very awesome Community in Penang – The LomoPenang

I have also met eva_eva during a trip to Kuala Lumpur and also melmonica, jetnz81 when they came in Penang. Some of the Community members have become my friends through Facebook; mont0417, yokekei, guitarleo, and kiwikoh.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Why not? There are still lots of experiments and Tipsters I would like to try.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

I do love the Lomo LC-A+, it’s my first Lomography camera! Other than that, the Spinner 360 would also be my favorite camera. I have always dreamt of having a panorama camera before the Spinner 360 was launched. I finished my first roll in just a few hours, but the results were amazing!

You just can’t get it wrong with the LC-A+!

For me, the Spinner 360° is not only a camera but a magic camera that gathers all your friends, family, or even strangers. Every time I take out the Spinner, my friends automatically gather around and gets ready for the shot. It is easy to use with just one pull of the cord. I love to see their smiling faces on my photo. It is also a suitable camera to bring for travel. Although sometimes, I feel that it is a bit hard to keep and a bit heavy to bring out, it is still very easy to use with just one pull of the cord!

Awesome Spinner shots!

Recently, I travel a lot with the LC-Wide. The 17mm Minigon Ultra-Wide Angle lens allows me to capture beautiful sceneries along the way. Plus the new focusing distance is easy and the 0.4m focus point lets me take my self-portrait and also a group photo with my friend. Also some pet portraits!

Having fun with the LC-Wide!

I have made a little experiment with the 0.4mm focus point of LC-wide. I shot a set of portrait double exposures and movie images with my little laptop which is I think js about 14 inches only. And the results are amazing! The images came out clear and nice although I think I got closer over the limit. Indeed, the 17mm ultra-wide Angle lens are wider than it could be because there were still lots of space left blank in the pictures’ corner. Anyway, for better viewing, I cropped out the blank spaces when I upload the photos.

From her LC-Wide experiment.

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

I always like snapping some underwater portrait shots but I do not have a Krab or an underwater camera that will allow me to do this. But I found that jetnz81, a Lomographer from Tawau in Sabah, took a diving course and has a lot of underwater shots so I approached him with this theme. No doubt, he agreed with the idea. We chose to use the LC-Wide for this doubles project. It is because of the easy focus point of the LC-Wide that can let Jet have a clear and nice underwater shot. First shot was done during Jet’s dive and the second shot was at a dance factory. Thanks to my friend and lovely model, Kim, for the crazy performance and her husband Tan Theng for the lighting design. The results turned great and received high opinions from the Community. It’s always fun to try something different and challenging!

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

Ya, this is hodachrome Lomograph. I have always liked his work. Plus this is something I want to try. I used to have a chance in doing it but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to prepare well. But it is ok! I will soon and hopefully it works!

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given or have heard?

“There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.” – Ansel Adams

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Do not fear to try.
Do not stop when you fail.
Be good to your camera. If not, they will not give you results.
