LomoGuru of the Week: Gocchin

He has won one huge Lomography contest, have tried tons of Lomography tips and tricks, have made friends outside and inside the Community, and has truly lived the Lomographic life!

So what else does this Lomographer need to do for him to deserve the LomoGuru crown? Well, I guess none! Coming from Japan, we have enjoyed his Lomographs that took us to places around the world. And I suppose now is the time to be entertained by this interview with him! So let me not bore you with all the introductions for here is this week’s LomoGuru, gocchin!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

It’s when I got the grand prize for the Lomography X Design TAXI: Find + Shoot a Taxi! Rumble in October 2011. I was so so so happy because I had never got any grand prizes or top scores even at school. But look, my first grand prize was a Lomography International contest! It was like a gold medal from the Olympic games for me!

After the announcement, I jumped to Hong Kong from Japan since the Hong Kong team told me that the winning photo was exhibited in the Lomography Gallery Store Hong Kong and that they held an opening party. I applied a paid holiday to my boss then flew to Hong Kong. They welcomed me very warmly and invited me to dinner and drinking after the party. It was a great night! I just loved Lomography more and more!

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

Yes, I’ve met some Lomographers and gangan is one of them. He is my first respectable Lomographer because his works are so peaceful & heartful. He is crazy about the LomoKino now. Also, a group exhibition called Life Lomo is held by Gallery Setagaya 233 in Tokyo every year. I joined this group exhibition in 2012 and 2013 so I could have a chance to meet cool Lomographers. By the way, the gallery owner, Mr.Nakane, is a great Lomographer, too!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Surely I will. Because taking Lomographs is my life work! And Lomography cameras accompany me during my travels, too. They’re like my passport, I can’t go anywhere without them. I have eight kinds of Lomography cameras already but I still have some in my wish list. I believe Lomography will release new cameras from now on and as long as they make new cool gears, I will continue to enjoy Lomography!

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

The crazy and amazing Lomo LC-Wide! I enjoy this camera while using the multiple exposure because of my overlapping images. If you don’t know what I mean by overlapping, see my article Get Creative with Overlapping Images with the LOMO LC-Wide.

We can imagine a multiple exposure result usually but it’s difficult for us to imagine an “overlapping” result. So If the images are crazy or amazing after being developed, I can’t help but be excited. I want to share this fever to everyone! So let’s try it!

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

This photo was taken with a Lomo LC-A+ with a Splitzer in Hong Kong. Before taking this photo, I visited the exhibit of Yayoi Kusama who is a very famous Japanese artist worldwide. When I saw her great work, I strongly felt as if she told me "Don’t hesitate, be daring!!!” It’s like Lomography’s 10 Golden Rules! After that, I always remember that thought whenever I take Lomographs. You also know, Taro Okamoto another very famous Japanese artist who said “Art is Explosion.” When I saw this photo, I remembered his phrase and I felt his mind. So this photo is a very special one for me.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

There is no failure when it comes to Lomography! Even if you think some of your works are failed, others may think that they are still amazing. So DO NOT delete them like images from a digital camera! If you are an analogue lover, you should enjoy the failure, too! And one more, I think you should find shooters and be inspired of their work. I think this is the first road to your success. If it’s me, then I’d be so happy! :)
