Asia Camera Museum
At the lovely Asia Camera Museum in George Town, Penang.
It is well worth a visit to the Asia Camera Museum in George Town, Penang. www.asiacameramuseum.com/ The curator / director on duty was very knowledgeable not only of the cameras we all love, but talked about the 18 or so film studios that dotted Penang with their own styles. It would be fun to take a group of students there. The wider area around there including Armenian Street, China House, Sixth Sense (if you like clothes) are not to be missed. PS Apparently there are two camera museums in town. This one is started by a group of photographers. There is another one up on Penang Hill that is more like a tourist trap with an "owl museum" that seems like it can be skipped. Be sure you look for the Asia Camera Museum.
Two more quick notes: 1) I would love to learn about really repairing cameras. I've tried some basic repairs, but it is not easy to get everything back in order. I bought some tools at Yodobashi (Japan Hobby Tools) and have guidebooks, but it takes a lot of patience. 2) If you like camera museums, be sure to check out the one in Tokyo (JCII Camera Museum - 日本カメラ博物館). I miss Tokyo.
