    Is MA full of these type of buildings over running water? In the history of the U.S. Civil war, there was a single MA city with factories that seemed to succeed at something over the entire Confederate South effort.

    Yes, there are plenty of them all over New England ,
    running water remained the main power source for quite a while so now one can find old woodworking, textile and other mills along almost every perennnial stream there. Few of these stone and wood structures were renovated but lot of them are abandoned.
