Formby's seaside nature reserve of Pine woodland is home to the endangered red Squirrel. The Squirrels have worryingly decreased in number due to disease. Beyond the tree line are some stunning sand dunes which are also home to some rare species including the Natterjack Toad and Northern Dune Tiger Beetle. These dunes form a fascinating and ever changing landscape which is moving inland by several metres a year. Erosion on the beach itself has apparently revealed footprints dating back 7000 years. Which begs the question: How did Neolithic man spend his time on the beach?
