Light Painting Magic by Kelvin Chan and the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens

Malaysian photographer Kelvin Chan boasts a long list of clients from his work as a commercial photographer. For this article, Kelvin got his hands on the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens and created amazing photos using the light painting technique.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomography community and the readers of the Online Magazine.

Hey everyone. My name is Kelvin Chan and I am a fashion and commercial photographer based in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

How did you get started with photography?

It all started on 1st May, 2010 at approximately 3pm. That was the date I got my very first DSLR which is the Nikon D90. I remember that particular day because that was the day I quit smoking. Being a smoker for 16 years, I thought it would be best to change my bad habit to a new hobby.

How would you describe your style as a photographer?

I love to see photographs that have this surreal fine art conceptual thingy to it. The thought of wondering how real is fantasy, or how real is reality intrigue me. I try my best to have this in my artwork.

What/Who do you consider as the greatest influence in your craft?

Now, this is a tough question. I guess whoever or whatever I can see, or hear, or touch and feel are some sort of inspiration. Definitely, there are a million photographers that I look up to but sometimes, I find myself influenced by amateur photographers, or models, or random colors, or even the guy crossing the street. Inspiration for me is everywhere.

How do you develop your skills?

Pick up my camera and do it. Do more. Always experimenting and try new things. If there is a certain style or technique I want to achieve, I will research it. And by that I mean really research about it either by asking my friends or by watching YouTube tutorials, searching online Google, finding magazines, or attending workshops. Whatever it takes for me to learn something new.

Can you share with us how it was like using the Petzval 58 Art Lens?

Well, it’s definitely something different. First of all the lens itself looks cool. If you are a photographer that wants good photos and fast, I am sorry to say that this lens is not for you but if you want great creative shots, then the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens might be for you. I found that the lens actually slows me down tremendously and forcing me to think out of the box, be creative. It reminded me of how passionate I am towards photography.

Can you tell us more about the shoot? Why light painting?

Currently, I am experimenting with light painting. I notice the Petzval 58 have this unique bokeh effect so I wanted to try pairing them.

Do you have ongoing or upcoming projects that you would like to tell the community about?

I have a series of ultraviolet (UV) photography that I have done and now I am trying new ways to pair it together. Hopefully, I can create something new by using different methods.
