Tipster of the Week: Melt That Plastic in Your Camera!

34

How to make beautiful borders for your Diana pictures with just a few pices of plastic, tape, and a lighter!

Do you remember this little square masks to put in your Diana for different picture sizes? After I realized that I get the most beautiful vignettes without them, I stopped using them. But after browsing on the Diana microsite, and after getting inspired by some beautiful mask modifications from other Lomographers, I started to try my own experiments.

I obtained great results with a very simple modification. For trying it, you just need:
- a Diana mask (4,2 × 4,2 cm or 5,2 × 5,2 cm)
- some pieces of cling film (that plastic foil that is used in the kitchen)
- a cigarette lighter
- some tape

Please excuse the bad quality of the pictures describing the process, my girlfriend took them with her mobile phone as I have no digital camera ;)

Cut square pieces of the cling film in the size of the plastic mask. Start to fix the first foil with some little pices of tape at the mask. Now you have to hold the lighter around 30 centimeter under the foil, light it, you can slowly reduce the distance, but be carefull! When it starts melting in the middle, it really melts fast!
When you are not satisfied with the reult as it is, put another piece of cling film, and do the same. If its still not enough for you (as most of it goes away when heating), put another one.

I think I heated three or four pieces of cling film, before I used the mask. Here are the results:

Camera: Diana F+, Film: Fujifilm ASTIA 100 expired

This is just one proposal for a mask experiment, feel free to vary it and to use it for other cameras, with other materials and other types of film!

Thanks ^_^ on the outside of the lense it can also be intereesting, but it's not as sharp as inside. But you can also do masks with Diana Mini! Like I did it in this picture: www.lomography.com/photos/11316809
