Takeshi Suga Captures Daughter (Band) with the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens

Our LomoAmigo Takeshi Suga had the exciting opportunity to shoot Daughter, an indie folk band from England, when they came to Japan as part of their tour. Takeshi used the Daguerreotype Achromart 2.9/64 Art Lens, and the photos turned out to be dreamy and magical.

Daughter is an indie folk band from England, formed in 2010 with Elena (Vocals), Igor (Guitars) and Remi (Drums). They first came to Japan in 2013 to join Fuji Rock Festival, and again in 2014 to join Hostess Club Weekender. This year on April, they finally came to Japan for a tour. LomoAmigo & Lomo lover photographer, Takeshi Suga, shot the live performance held in Osaka.

Daughter’s melancholic atmosphere and Takeshi’s dreamy touch style matched perfectly using silky soft focus of Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens. Takeshi handed over Diana F+ to members, who were also interested in film photography. Photos taken by the band will be introduced on another article, so please stay tuned!

Hi, Takeshi. First of all thank you for handing over the Diana F+ to the band! How did they react when they first saw it?

Igor was super happy to get Diana F+. It was before the live performance, but he was reading the manual earnestly and was ready to shoot! He asked me several questions like “What is this part used for?” or “Where is the best place to shoot indoors?” so the backstage became a workshop room in a flash.

I heard that you had a great chat with the band members about film photography! Could you tell me more about this great news?

Actually Remi’s grandfather was a photographer in US, so he also knew a lot about film cameras! He brings film cameras as many as possible during their tour. (You can check out Remi’s Instagram here)

Please tell me about shooting Daughter with Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens. Did you feel something special in this situation?

When I lived in London, I was nominated to shoot their new artist photo, and this brought me a chance to shoot this time. At the same time, I was asked to test this lens, and at the next instant a great image popped up in my mind, so these shots were born. The schedule and space were quite tight, but I think everything matched super nicely. For the next time, I would like to shoot artist photos or artworks with them!

How did they react when they saw the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens?

All of three were familiar with Lomography’s products, so they said “This looks like a Petzval! “ and after introducing a bit about this lens, they seem to have a great interest on the Waterhouse Aperture plate system.

Which of the shots best suit the band’s atmosphere? Also, your photos are often described as "dreamy”. How did you try to take those shots in this situation?

As a professional musician, it is normal that their dreamy button will be switched on at the stage. On stage, the lighting enhances everything, which brings out so many dream-like shots, so I think the photo at the end of this article best expresses the dreamy shot. Ah, but when Elena was backstage, I also felt strong will beyond the camera finder. She is a true artist.

I love Daughter and I think Elena has a special healing voice – like a soft sound coming from a foggy forest. For you, what kind of image makes you relax and feel comfortable?

I think Elena’s voice is not just melodious, it is pleasant with dark undertones and passion. As I don’t fancy simply happy music, I’m enamored with the image of straight light shining with melancholia.

Thank you Takeshi for the great shots and invaluable interview with Daughter. Do you have anything more to share? Any special projects?

From 2nd to 31st June, I joined a group exhibition “Winter Wonderland” held at Gallery TANTO TEMPO in Kobe. It is summer now, but I will display photos taken in winter at Hokkaido.
