While I was in Pangasinan working on the health caravan project, I received from a friend the devastating news that Master Samaon Sulayman, a National Living Treasure of the Philippines awardee for his exemplary art of playing the Magindanaon kutyapi (a traditional 2-string lute), died on 22nd May 2011. I had the opportunity of working with him in the past three International Rondalla (Plucked String Instruments) Festivals held in Naga/Albay, Dumaguete and Tagum City. I was able to take portraits of him during rehearsals prior to the closing concert of the festival in the Carillon Plaza of the University of the Philippines in Diliman early this year. I doubled the shots I took of him with shots of EDSA - the most famous major thoroughfare in the country. This set is my tribute to a great artist worthy of emulation and highest honors. Goodbye Master Samaon. May you rest in peace.
