Queen's Day / Koninginnedag 2012: morning of the day of the party, after the party from the night before

As the sun rises over the horizon at 7:30am on 30 April 2012, the morning of the Dutch 'Queen's Day' celebration, Dam Square in Amsterdam was already littered with the remnants from a night of hard pre-partying, before the day of the main party. You can guarantee that no street cleaner will be working today! // In this photo, a temporary fun fair stands in front of the Royal Palace (far left and far right), to its right is the Nieuwe Kerk (the New Church, built in the 15th century). Also seen is the department store well-known to the Dutch (it’s even mentioned in Anne Frank’s diary) – ‘De Bijenkorf’, and a war memorial. Dam Square is where a dam was once built on the Amstel River in the 13th century, which gave rise to the origin of the city’s name ‘Amsterdam’.
