Seoul Fashion Week: Third Eye’s The Charm

The 2016 Spring Session of Seoul Fashion Week went off without a hitch between March 21st and the 26th. Continuing my project of fashion portraiture taken during this event, I was pleased to find enthusiasm had grown from the last time I stumbled into the alien-like Dongdaemun Design Plaza with my twin lens reflex camera. This being my third time attending, I decided to focus on creating a great many of my “third eye” portraits. I had made a few before during my last two visits but I felt this time I really wanted to push how many I could capture. Though of course, I also experimented with other forms of composition. All in all, I think this session of SFW was the most productive I’ve had. Maybe it’s because I’ve grown familiar with it and know what to expect. Maybe it was luck. Either way, I felt totally at ease moving through the crowd. In a weird way, I felt like I was dancing. As if I was moving to the external rhythm of the event. And then suddenly, there would be these beautiful moments of meeting new people and creating a connection. Being given permission to really look at someone is a strange mixture of intense sensitivity. Not only that, but for me, there is always a sense of spectacle and the apparition of glamour that adds another level of fascination to Seoul Fashion Week. I continually hear John Berger’s thoughts echoing in my own third eye as I witness this new cultural tradition take place in the heart of Seoul, South Korea.
