whanga

NZ's most remote hotel on the "Forgotten Highway" SH43. whangamomna in te reo Maori means "Band of plump travellers." Maybe it refers to rich food sources such as birds or pigs. The pub celebrates Republic Day around 26 January with a Community Sports Day held in the street outside the pub which attracts many visitors. The republic was declared within the pub walls as a protest against redrawn boundary lines which would have removed it from Taranaki. Passports are issued from the bar. The barman was hungover, the pighunter is wearing iconic woollen balaclava and swanndri jacket. A packet of Park Drive tobacco and zigzag papers lie on the bar alongside a pint of Tui beer. Most unPC before smoke free legislation banned smoking indoors in public places. They are fair dinkum Kiwi jokers. The pub has been renovated and gentrified but is still well worth a visit. Historic rugby team photos still line the walls along with sawmilling artefacts.
