Solo Photowalk Routes: The Old Kuantan

1

Kuantan is the state capital of Pahang, Malaysia. For sure, this is a big city faced a lot of development over the years, but it also has the touch of history. Let’s go for a walk to see the new and old.

Kuantan is said to have been found in the 1850s. It is situated near the mouth of the Kuantan River and faces the South China Sea.

The very first cemented shops built were at Jalan Besar and Jalan Mahkota, and they serve as the first historical buildings in Kuantan. After a decade, most of the buildings have been changed — some of them were burnt down because of a fire accident; some of them have been re-constructed. So we can see that the buildings now have a mixture of the new and old.

It is worth to take a walk at these old streets, and see the development of the city. There are a lot of shops still open for business. In fact, these two are known for its “salted fish”, because there were a lot of shops that sold the product in the past.

Old-fashioned grocery stores can still be found along the streets, as well as a lot of fabric and clothes shop. Old-fashioned barber shops can be found too, the type ran by old men.

The shops are the sign of the development. They are parts of the history of Kuantan. The main street of the city is still the same; the street is still very crowded. When I am free, I like to take walks along here and snap some pictures because one cannot be sure that all these things will still exist in the future.
