Travel back in time at the Jurassic Coast of Dorset

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of southern England. You can really travel back in time here. Just imagine – those yellow cliffs of Bridport are about 185 million years old!

Once in Dorset, the easiest way to get to those marvelous yellow cliffs is through Bridport. Drive past Bridport Golf course to Burton Bradstock and there you go. Burton Beach is what you need. While in Bridport, try to visit the Palmers Brewery to stock up on beers and ales. Hiking down the beach can be extremely thirsty work. My favorite discovery so far is Dorset Gold ale. Yummy! You can have a brewery tour here as well, if you want to.

So, once on the beach, you can walk for miles. Make sure you have checked the tide schedule, as you can be cut out by the water if you go too far. The beach here consists of very small, rounded pebbles, which are mainly of chert and flint, so it is not too comfy to lie down and sunbathe, but still better than big pebbles.

Footnote:
Incidentally and mentioned just for interest, further down the beach to the east in “June 1757, a supposed mermaid was thrown up on shore between Portland and Burton, thirteen feet long; the head was partly like that of a man and partly like that of a hog. Its fins resembled hands, it had forty-eight large teeth in each jaw”. (History of Dorset, 1774, vol 1, p.338 1st ed. – referred to in Damon, 1884 ). It might have been a manatee or a sea-cow washed in from somewhere far in the southwest.

You can easily spend the whole day here, it is so welcoming and colorful. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of those bright yellow cliffs. Now I have the same photos taken with 3 different cameras!

@adi_totp UK is very versatile, it can look like any country in the world! Also, this particular part used to be a desert millions of years ago, it looked like Namib desert!
