England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, is within striking distance from Wasdale Campsite as are many other high fell walking routes.

But, if you enjoy flat but picturesque walks and Ale drinking at the pub, head to Wasdale Head Inn. It is only a short walk away, but on the way you will see huge ancient trees, mysterious river beds, paradise looking emerald grass loans. You will have to jump from stone to stone across the stream of mountain water to be awarded at the end by a pint and a meal!

Choose from small pub menu, or head to the restaurant- they specialise in Herdwick lamb & mutton when available.

The world famous Ritson’s Bar and Residents’ Lounge provide a warm welcome for thirsty, hungry and walk-weary guests.

Ritson’s Bar is named after the first landlord, Will Ritson – huntsman, wrestler, farmer, fellsman, guide, raconteur, and the first “World’s Biggest Liar”.

Each year, in November, a contest is held at The Bridge Inn, Santon Bridge, to award the title of ‘The Biggest Liar in the World’, to the person who is worthy of following in Will Ritson’s footsteps.

The first prize includes cash, The Biggest Liar Certificate, a silk tie printed with ‘The Biggest Liar in the World’ and the majestic Jennings Trophy.
