Capetown Stadium

The worldcup of football just started and the worldwide craze will reach its pinnacle in the next days. The most exciting thing about the world’s greatest sport-event beside the olympics is the hosting nation: South Africa. And as every tournament of such scale helps to build an lasting infrastructure it is the stadiums that are the first stars of the cup. One of the most impressive ones is the capetown stadium.

During the planning stage it was still called after the city-quarter it is built in, Green Point, close to the Victoria & Alfred waterfront. It is quite an impressive monument, which is visible from almost everywhere in the city. It is surrounded by a 60 hectar urban park, I think they just don’t know what to do with it right now. I had a chance to shoot the site roughly 3 months before the tournament. all calm and untouched by the masses. And still protected by someone or something by massive barbwire. But it would be cool if some lomographers add some pics from the worldcup…

They finished building the stadium in december 2009, which was unlikely for a long time. But as always, the Africans have the power to impress. As football is second in popularity to rugby, the 68.000 seats are quite optimistic for football games. Even now during the cup, the stadiums are not always filled, because the locals cannot pay for all of the tickets. But they made up their minds allready for the use after the cup. The capacity will be reduced to 55.000 and it will be used mainly for rugby and the local team Ajax Cape Town and superstar-concerts.

The Capetown stadium is built by German architects, many of the new ones are. That’s something they can do best and the experience from Worldcup 2006 really radiated worldwide. Anyway, important is on the pitch, let’s play some ball guys! And leave that damn yellow cards in the pockets…

Interesting that the first pic is not the stadium, but a ship from the Waterfront ;)
