The Mormon Rocks

Holey rocks? Holy rocks? The Morman Rocks, rocks with holes… Yes a very strange sight to see! But oh what a lomographic dreamland!

I am not sure how holy they may be, but yes these huge rocks are most definitely full of holes. Called the “Mormon Rocks” due to their discovery by Mormon explorers, these behemoth stones are located in the Cajon Pass on Highway 138 in Southern California, between the towns of Wrightwood and Phelan and just off the infamous Rout 66.

The rocks are made of soft sandstone pushed up from the ground by the San Andreas fault, and due to rain and occasional snow fall, the rock faces are being slowly carved away creating a range of different sized shallow holes all over the rocks. Some holes are large enough to fit one, two, even three people inside, while others are slender and deeper allowing access only very small animals.

The rocks themselves are very odd looking, large round dome like structures amidst the hills and flat lands of the Cajon Pass. Even without the mysterious looking holes, the Mormon Rocks will catch your eye from the highway and leave you wondering, “what were those strange things?” I wondered for years until just over a year ago when I started regularly driving past them. Finally i realized I could not pass up photographing such a unique sight! So for your viewing pleasure I would like to present to you my photos of the visually enticing Mormon Rocks!

Sorry for the over developed shots!
