Pike Place Public Market (Seattle)

I can´t really say something about public market culture in the US, but I reckon it is everywhere different, hence the very 50 states all have a different history and flavor. I personally dig the coasts the most and therefore I was quite impressed by the fish market at the Pike Place Market.

It was opened in 1907, which makes it the oldest and still operating farmers market in the country. What I found quite interesting, is, that in the early 40s most of the booths were owned by Japanese-Americans, who lost their property after the Pearl Harbor Bombing. See how history changes the face of such a thing? It is Seattle’s favorite tourist destination now, because there is not much else to see.

Besides fresh vegetables the main attraction of the market are surely the fisherman with their stands. They are shouting like madmen and praise the fresh salmon they have caught just around the corner in the pacific. They claim, that this is the freshest fish in the world and look quite wild in the rubber fishermen suits. They have a web page and they have gained even some status as celebrities I assume. I have seen some fellows sign some books about them, which they are selling and the same booth the fish lays. It is quite an experience to wander around the market and you might eat your salmon in the nearby restaurants at the area. We were digging the little Chinese restaurant with view onto the bay.
Hence the weather is quick strange, like in every other harbour, the market is very nice to be visited on a rainy day, which will be highly numerous in Seattle.

You’ll find the market north of the western avenues between Pike Street and Union Street. It is just opposite to Elliott Bay. I suggest you take a walk there. Cars suck!
