Settu Menu (Japan)

Before someone takes on the grand journey to the Island his teeth and legs shake in expectations of the massive costs such an endeavor will take on you. Everyone heard about square melons or beef by cattle, which was pampered with red wine, music and social care 24/7, and even more so that these products cost a fortune. I already saw myself washing dishes to repay my depths and wisely enough I took handy little packages of Muesli along in my baggage, not to starve while traveling. But to my big surprise all of this precaution was not necessary. There is Settu Menu and it is all you need.

No matter in what town you are, big or small you will find it. And that is how it goes. At certain times everyday, from 12 until 14 o’clock and at night, after work, there is some kind of restaurant happy hour. Certain bistros open just for these hours and offer you a menu from about 600 to 1500 yen, which is about 6-10 Euro. The sets often consist of a big bowl of fried noodles or noodle-soups and a large bowl of rice with something extra. Water is given for no cost and often they even offer cold green tea. Most of the dishes are fishy, hence Japan is an Island and this is the biggest natural resource. I promise, chose a settu menu as the main dish of the day and you can save a lot of money. Organize everything around your lunch as you have only certain hours for eating it.

The choice is of course is limited and after a week you will have tried all possible sets and the taste will be similar. But hey this is really saving you some bucks for the sushi at night and all the other freaky products you can buy in Japan. In Kyoto I also fond on Restaurant, which had settu menus all day long, but maybe it was just a Fata Morgana. This would be too great to be true.
