LomoGuru of the Week: Troch

She has been taking film photographs for most of her life and doesn’t see herself quitting the addiction soon. She has also been a member of the Community for more than six years — talk about loyalty!

Thousands of Lomographs and hundreds of photo albums can be viewed in her LomoHome. I bet you will take a whole day browsing her photographs one by one. She’s a LomoGuru, for sure! That’s why it’s only proper to snag an interview with this femme from Canada, troch! Read all about her analogue journey and view her most picturesque photographs below.

Name: Mary Burgoyne (but I have always signed my photographs “troch”)

Location: Sunshine Coast, Canada
Number of years as a Lomographer: I got my first camera in 1967 and I never stopped shooting analogue. I guess that means 46+. Oh dear, that makes me feel so old!
Number of years in the Community: 6 years and more. Since March 2007.

Tell us something about yourself… What do you do for a living? What are your main interests?

I am an office manager for a small health regulatory organization [which helps me] earn enough money to support my hobbies mainly photography and reading as well as the great outdoors; hiking, biking, etc. I have recently opened a gallery at my home on the outskirts of nowhere and hope to eventually be a full-time photographic artist.

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name. Why that username?

I got nicknamed troch during my first year of college and just adopted it. I can’t tell you how many times I heard “Mary had a little lamb” growing up. And troch has no gender or ethnicity and therefore no expectations which appealed to the artist in me.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

For me, the great fellowship, support, acceptance, and sharing of ideas with like-minded photographers make every visit in the Lomographic Community memorable. Someone once asked me what the difference was between Lomography and digital photography and my answer was: “Digital photographers spend hours in Photoshop removing power line and poles. Lomographers take pictures of power lines.”

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

I don’t get out much. :( However, a friend of a friend helped me build my darkroom in 2012 and we have become great friends. My passion for analogue photography rubbed off on him and you now know him as rcwater. I did have the opportunity to meet the amazing mafiosa on a visit to Calgary a couple of years ago as well.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Absolutely, I will shoot Lomographs for as long as there is film. I feel a great connection with the process and I have a freezer full of film to capture my vision.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

No surprise here, the Holga is my camera of choice. And I own many of them in various configurations; pinhole, wide pan, etc. I love the results and the predictable unpredictability.

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

I would have to go with fading into time…

This old building was my muse for many years. It is almost gone now and this photo keeps the memory and inspiration alive. I love that I have recorded this moment in time.

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

Keep shooting the things that have meaning to you! If you shoot for any other reason, your personal connection with the photo will not be there.

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, what is that and why?

Haunt You by The Pack A.D.. It’s dark, edgy, and raw just a lot like some of my best photos. Rock on grrrls!

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Truly the best advice I could give would be to keep shooting and to take notes so you know what works and what does not. You need to get a feel for both your camera and the film and even failures will help you develop that.
