LomoGuru of the Week: Paper_doll

5

Lomography has been a part of her life not only during the good times but also during the bad times. She does not only capture happy moments in film but also makes sure that she is able to shoot the bittersweet ones, too.

Three years into turning a decade old in this Community, this femme from Portugal has reached lots of milestones in this humble analogue world of ours. She can’t see herself curing the analogue bug soon for she wants it to be with her forever even when kids arrive and when people have come and go.

No need for further introductions for this one’s a gem! Say hello to paper_doll, this week’s LomoGuru!

Name: Ana Paula Sousa
Lomography Username: paper_doll
Location: London, UK (but originally from Porto, Portugal)
Number of years as a Lomographer: 7
Number of years in the Community: 7

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

This is the username that I have used since I first had internet connection at home, circa 1997. And i’ve been sticking with it for over 10 years.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

I’ve had a few. Being LHOTD for the first time in 2007 was my first big experience. After that, having my pictures exhibited in different cities such as Budapest, Vienna, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles or even at the MoMA (NY) was very exciting!

Some of paper_doll’s popular Lomographs!

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

I have met nice people in the Community, like tmmluis and janidays and I have made some cool doubles with known Lomographers such as takezzo and mephisto19. Also, I am the administrator of a Portuguese internet forum called Forum Lomográfico which also helps Portuguese Lomographers connect — meet for photo safaris and swap films for doubles among other things.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Of course I will! Lomography has been a part of my life for so long that I couldn’t just give it up. Sometimes I imagine myself teaching my children how to shoot with my Actionsampler (I haven’t got any kids at the moment) so you understand my passion for Lomography at this point!

From her favourite LC-A+ RL.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

My favourite Lomographic camera has to be my LC-A+ RL. It has traveled with me everywhere, it has seen many historical places, many music festivals, lots of people (even strangers), lots of big cities and small villages, lots of snow, and lots of sunshine. It’s old and sort of falling apart but I love it.

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

It’s hard to choose one but I am going to say this one:

It has two things that I love about London – the red booth and Hyde park. But it is also important that it was taken when my parents first went to visit me from Portugal. The pink dots were some kind of anomaly with the film (I know it’s the film and not the lab’s fault because I have seen it on other people’s CT Precisa) but to me this was no problem at all. I think the little dots are lovely and adds charm!

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

Have you seen this picture? And the rest of the album? I wish I had done that, it’s absolutely gorgeous!

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

Lomography is here to help us remember the people, places, animals, and objects that we have loved and have made us happy, even if for only a moment. Every time you look at your pictures, you relive these moments. So shoot the happy moments and maybe the bitter sweet ones as well (like saying goodbye to an old friend) but always have a camera in hand and shoot a lot. As with most things in life, one day you will regret more the things you didn’t photograph, than the ones you did.

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, what is that and why?

Music is very important to me, but choosing a movie seems to be more of a challenge. So I choose Annie Hall because whether you like Woody Allen or not, this is a great movie and one you must watch asap if you haven’t.

This is my favourite scene from Annie Hall. Apart from the obvious reason (she’s a photographer and the whole thing is just hilarious!) I love the lobster scene because it shows how two different people can react so differently to the same thing.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

My advice is always for people to try lots of different films, as it helps to know their camera. They should also practice a lot and embrace their mistakes. They will learn with all of it.
