LomoGuru of the Week: Fafascinado

He has been a Lomographer for half a decade and the first advise that he gives us is to “never give up.” I bet this week’s LomoGuru is all about the learning analogue experience!

We know him for his portraits and the lovely subjects captured by his lens. He is definitely a friendly guy, too! But behind all of these online impressions, we have got to know more about this man from London. Ladies and gentlemen, meet this week’s LomoGuru, fafascinado!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

It’s difficult to choose just one. I have been able to share so many good experiences here that I must say THANK YOU to Lomography for letting me be a part of some exhibitions. The first of these were in Spain where some of my photos became a part of small but lovely exhibitions in bars and cafes. Later, one of my pictures was featured in a guide of Barcelona, my home city. After moving to London I was excited to have the opportunity to feature some of my work in a larger exhibition. Around a dozen of my photos were on that lovely Museum of London LomoWall. That was awesome! I could go on with more but I won’t. I can’t thank Lomography enough for these opportunities.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

Yes, and it is one of the best things about the Community — building friendships by sharing your photos, liking them, and leaving comments. By following people’s work which I connect with and am inspired by, you can begin to share ideas, questions and answers, and even something more personal like film swaps.

I have done these with some awesome Lomographers like mephisto19 and susielomovitz. I really enjoyed the experience and I love the results!

Aside from online friends, I have also met lovely people that I can consider as LomoFriends. One of them is anafaro. She contacted me for a photoshoot in London that she was doing and I accepted inmediately. Even though I don’t like modeling I really enjoyed it. Not just because she took nice photos of me but also because we shared ideas, techniques,and we talked about what we [both] love — photography.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

I definitely won’t give Lomography up. I know one day I will be working in [the field of] photography, enjoying what I love the most — taking photos. Since I started Lomography I have been using digital photography less and less. I would much rather shoot film over digital. I like the mystery of non-instant photos, the grain, the colors, the mistakes, the light leaks, and especially hiding my face behind my analog camera. I can’t imagine life without a camera… and film of course!

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

This is a very difficult question. I now have more than 10 Lomo cameras. I like all of them because they create different effects, but it depends on where you go and what you want to photograph. There is only one camera that for me, you can use anywhere at anytime and it’s the Lomo LC-A+. It’s very compact and you can go anywhere with it. It has fast focusing (but not always precise) and the best thing, the light meter. That is what I really like about this camera. You don’t have to worry about over or underexposed photos because the LC-A+ will always choose the right exposure.

The best experiences I’ve had using my cameras are when I am introducing them to peple that do not know anything about Lomography. At first they think you are like a freak or that you just want to look cool with an analogue camera hanging around your neck. But, when you explain to them how they work and how creative it can be, they change their minds and [are suddenly] pleased to pose for you!

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

I’ve got lovely memories attached in this photo. You might think it isn’t an awesome photo but it is very special for me. It was from the first film I shot after I moved back to using analogue photography. This photo changed my perception of Lomography. It made me think… this is cool, this is funny, and I can take some interesting photos. Since then I have always beencarrying a Lomography camera with me. You never know when you will be able to take the photo of your life.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Never give up. We ALL make mistakes. Even more so when we start out. My first roll was a disaster and I did the last thing you should do, I gave up. Luckily I started again a few months later and the results were much better. My advice is practise, practise, and more practise.
