To live in a world entirely shot in digital is unthinkable and something not ideal for someone like him who bears a heart made not of glass, but of analogue love! A native of Vienna, Thomas talks about his friends, cameras and the future of film in this Q&A session we had with him!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

For I have been to many Lomographer Meetings, there are many memorable experiences. Like this spring’s meeting when we did some “urban exploring” in an old deteriorated factory near Vienna, when we climbed up dangerous rusted ladders, and shot great atmospheric as well as ghosty pictures.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

I made a lot of new friends since i started with Lomography in 2010 and attended Lomo Meetings in Austria. Let me name two of them:

floriansimon with whom i can talk hours about film types, cameras, development, future and past of analogue photography, techniques, history of the LC-A and Lomographic Society and more. It’s always fun meeting him and he’s a hardcore-member oft he Viennese Lomo-Crowd. Cheers to you, FloSi!

The other Lomographer is pulex . I think pulex has done everything with photographic films you can do; cooking, pushing, salting, … He’s the master of analogue experimentation and also an expert in fixing LC-As. He’s a hilarious and friendly person, a talented musician (plays in several bands) and a great Lomographer. Keep on rocking, Mr. Pulex!

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

I hope so! If there’s still chemistry for developing and films to shoot, I will definitely continue shooting with Lomographic cameras until the last film on earth is shot.

And why? Because no digital camera can give you these magical pictures unlike a Lomo camera can do. Each film turns out different and every picture is an unique piece of art. I can’t imagine a world where every picture is taken digitally.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

That’s an easy and hard question to answer. Easy because it’s the LC-A, without discussion. If i could only use one (digital or analogue) camera in my whole life, it would be the LC-A. It’s the greatest camera ever made with it’s auto-exposure system, the beautiful vignette, and the blasting colours!

But it‘s also a hard question, because I love my other cameras as well. My second favorite camera is the Horizon Perfekt for it‘s unique wide-angle lens which goes great with high-contrast B/W films. And on the third place is the Diana F+. Never seen such dreamy, retro, vintage, soft, lovely pictures before! This is the equipment i always have with me on holidays or other special events – can‘t go without them!

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Maybe: The best advice is Rule #1: Take your camera everywhere you go! I shot my best pictures in places and situations I’d never have taken a common digital camera with me (like in the sea or on the rollercoaster!).

If you want the absolute Lomographic freedom, start developing and scanning your films at home! It‘s really easy and inexpensive and you will never be frustrated when the lab again cut your precious Horizon shots or didn‘t x-pro your slide films! Believe me, all you need is some chemistry, a developing tank, and 30 minutes of time.

And the third advice is: print your photos and make albums or photobooks! There‘s nothing better than flicking through your best and favourite shots in a big book!

and now… Lomo on, dear friends!

They are the ones whose passion transcends not only by what they do and say, but also with what they see and capture with their film cameras. And with such attributes aforementioned, they are what we call LomoGurus! Every week, we get to ask questions and reveal some insights with the most talented and productive of all Lomographers from the Community!
