Analogue Escapes: Daniel Rodrigues and the Lomo LC-A+

Daniel Rodrigues is a Portuguese photojournalist who loves to travel. He currently lives in Porto and recently took the Lomo LC-A+ as his daily sidekick on his latest trips to New York City and London. In this interview, he tells us everything about his love for photography and how the Lomo LC-A+ made him rediscover this passion once more.

Hi Daniel! Welcome to our magazine, could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello, first of all, thank you very much for the invitation to be a LomoAmigo. It’s an honour. My name is Daniel Rodrigues, I'm a Portuguese photojournalist, who loves photography and travel! I live in Porto, Portugal, but I spend my life traveling to photograph stories, places or assignments for the New York Times, where I work as a collaborator since 2015. My specialty is documentary photography and travel photography.

How did you get started with photography?

From a very young age I have always been surrounded by cameras. Either my mother or my uncle always walked around with cameras to take photos. I think my passion started then and there! Then when I was around 18 years old, I saw that it was really what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a photojournalist and tell stories through my images.

You won quite a few photography awards so far, including the first place for the World Press Photo award. What inspires you when taking photographs?

What inspires me most is the people! Their stories! I usually say that it is not the landscapes that make the places but the people! Each person has a story, something special. And this is inspiring.

How would you define your photography style? What do you want your audience to feel or think when looking at your photos?

I think it's the approach. How I approach the subjects that I photograph. I like to be close to people, to gain their trust and I think that in my work you can feel that. Moreover, I love black and white and I think my work is recognisable by that too. Although I take color photos I see the world in black and white. I "read" the light better in black and white.
And I would like my audience to feel that approach – that I felt what I felt when I was with those people in those places.

How did you like shooting with the Lomo LC-A+?

It was great! I've always been a fan of Lomographhy and shooting with the LC-A+ was an amazing experience! It was so good to go back to analogue. Taking a picture and not knowing if it was good or not. Have patience and only photograph the very important things that you know you can give a good shot. Waiting until you reveal the picture and see what effect the image has. An incredible experience! And what I loved the most about the Lomo LC-A+ it's that it is small. I always walked with it in my pocket and always took it with me everywhere I went.

What advice would you give to any photographers trying out the Lomo LC-A+?

Do not be afraid to experiment with it. Embrace analogue! Look for those effects that only Lomography can create. Approach people and photograph them – I am sure you will love it! It is a very good camera to always walk around with and photograph our moments in another way. They'll be as surprised as me when they see the final result: Woaw, I just love it!

What is analogue photography to you?

It's taking me back to when I fell in love with photography. Going back to having patience and waiting for the right moment. Do not shoot just for the sake of shooting... Shoot with passion!

What are your next plans for this year? Can you share some insights to your upcoming projects?

It's still very uncertain, but I love trains and I wanted to do a report on trains! Spend a month living on trains in Asia for example. That's my plan.

Thank you very much for your kind words Daniel!
