Newcomer of the Week: Arman B. Aguilar (@armanb)

His interest in photography started at an early age. Influenced by his father’s teachings, he began photographing with a Zeiss Ikon Contessa and mastering the “sunny 16” rule. As he explores more photographic techniques, he became drawn to the unpredictability of experimental and alternative processes such as cross processing, shooting with redscale films, and cyanotype printing. Get to know our community newcomer from Spain, Arman B. Aguilar, in this interview.

Arman B. Aguilar aka @armanb

Name: Arman B. Aguilar
LomoHome: @armanb
Location: Barcelona, Spain

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I was born in Barcelona and I’ve been interested in photography ever since I can remember. I started with my father’s camera, a Zeiss Ikon Contessa, and with the knowledge I learned from him: the “sunny 16.” I learned photography in the 80s before the appearance of the first digital cameras and I’ve always felt more comfortable with old film cameras.

Currently, I am interested in processes used in the early days of photography, such as cyanotype and Van Dyke among others, and dedicate a part of my time to learning these techniques.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I discovered the Lomography Community by chance while looking for analog cameras online. I decided to join when I saw the images shared by other users.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

No. 10: Don’t worry about any rules. I think that perfectly summarizes the spirit of the Community. Avoid focusing only on the rules, which in turn allows us to experiment and discover new possibilities.

In this digital age, why still film?

With film, we can maintain some control over what the end result will be, if we wish to. We can also introduce an infinite number of variables that affect the image and the final result can turn into something unique and unpredictable.

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

My favorite camera is a Nikon F Photomic FTN and I like it because it allows me to use a wide variety of lenses: early manual focus Nikkor, the Diana F+ lenses and, of course, the New Petzval 85. For medium format shots, I like my Hasselblad 500 CM with Karl Zeiss C series lenses.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

I would have a Horizon Perfekt to take panoramic photos. I hope someday I can have one.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

A book that influenced me and changed my perception about photography is “On Photography” by Susan Sontag.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

I like this image for the texture and special atmosphere produced by the washi film.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

I only discovered this Community recently and I’m still exploring a lot of interesting images that the members post each day. My interest is centered on double exposure, redscale, blurry or distorted photos. And also on images taken with special films or that have been altered by an x-pro developing or treated with alternative chemical processes.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I enjoy the pictures and I think that’s a continuous source of inspiration. I hope to share my images with the community and discover new possibilities through exploring other members archives and publications.

Thank you Arman for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the community and we’re all looking forward to seeing your future work!
