Klara Johanna Michel: What's In Your Bag

Photographers’ bags just make us go curiouser and curiouser, their daily items inside their bags are quite different than the rest. Photographer Klara Johanna Michel shares her personal life through the innards of her quirky tote bag.

Hi Klara! We noticed that your usual “go-to” bag and items are rather light and small. Do you prefer to travel lightly?

Yes.

You bring with you a compact camera. On what instances do you use the camera for when you’re out and about?

For my work I don´t take snapshots. My output is usually just one or two images per session. And from the day of the shooting until the final image comes out there can be a time frame of 1-2 weeks. I carefully pick the image, scan it, print it, colour it and scan it again. That´s important to me, because I am just going to create content which I stand for. The snapshot camera is a 4 Euro one from the flea market and I just use it to make photos of my friends for a private diary. It´s a cheap one so I can take it with me all the time without being worried that there will be a damage.

You also bring a journal with you. If you don’t mind us asking, what do you jot down with it?

I write down ideas and things I want to remember.

Also a lot of USB flash drives! May we know what they’re for?

Usually they are used to store scans of my negatives or data for the print shop. I print one image 3-6 times and color them in different variations. I have a lot of these small sticks, for which I never really paid for. Most of the USB´s are promotional gifts with just limited memory.

You have a nice set of headphones there to go with your iPod, as well as that Bleib Modern canvas tote! Which tunes are you currently in to right now?

Bleib Modern is a band I really enjoy and I ordered a T-shirt, which came with a bag… so now I am using the bag every day. Currently I listen to Sentimentale Jugend – wollt ihr die totale Befriedigung. This is a German 80’s band and members are Alexander Hacke and Christiane Felscherinow. I also listen to The Amazing Snakeheads a lot.

We also noticed you only bring one cosmetic with you — a lipstick. Mind telling us your current favorite shade of lippie?

I don’t have a favourite, I like them all. But I prefer dark shades.

Among all these items in your bag, if you could only bring one with you, which would it be and why?

My keys, I want to be able to have a good sleep in my bed and shut myself away from public for a while.
