Very creative, wonderful!! Could you build something that could survive a launch from a pototo cannon? That might get you the altitude, then time the parachute and the photo exposure. Use something like a Wedding Reception Cam.

Cool rocket! I'm with you, I thought the new and amazing camera was going to be a real rocket like the Estes rocket cam (although I must say that I really do like the Sprocket Rocket). We launched a lot of Estes rockets as kids and my buddy even had one of those rocket cams--I don't remember much about it, though, but hell yes, I'd be up for a Lomo rocket cam!

Absolute gold. Pity it didn't work out but major points for idea and execution.

If they did manage to come up with one that had a semi-reliable timer to jedge height of the shot I'd def wanna grab it for kicks.

OMG! This is madness! This is super cool! Now if you can only shoot the rocket all the way here to Singapore ... then we can do a doubles with it. :D Please don't hit any plane or birds on the way here though.

ahahahah you are a fucking genius :)...these are my feelings from my first space journey on Dec. 28, 2010: the idea of capturing the images from a rocket camera help us to understand our world and its surroundings. I know that there are a range of modifications and improvements required to meet the stringent demands of a rocket camera but it's something that worth it. So LSI apply your knowledge and expertise and support such great idea in order to provide lomographic equipment on – or off - the planet.

Amazing work, mate! so cool! It reminds me of a friend of mine who rigged up a camera (digital) to the underside of his remote control plane and took aerial photos. he rigged up a trigger device so he could take pictures on demand. that could take the guess work of the self timer out of the equation. Great work keep it up!

oooooh fantastic! i had the same idee a long time ago (i think when i was forced to think of new holga modifications) but i nver realised this project. i wasn't even close to this huge amount of effort!
i really love you for trying this out. :)
in my plans the parachute would have relesed the shutter, not sure how exactely that would have worked, but i thought the weight of the camera when falling down in combination with the deceleratnig force of the parachute could be enough....
i hope to see more of this kind... DIY!!!

@panelomo: Thanks for the support Jay ! Why Ikaros ? It's Greek mythology, here's the story (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus) it's a parallel between his trajectory and this camera's trajectory... : ) Uuuuup and doooown 8D

@-l-l-l-: I'm proud to get such a nice comment from a TRUE camera designer as you !
@mandi: My dear, you would have most certainly succeeded if you had tried ! And you are absolutely right, in IKAROΣ 2, the shutter will be triggered by the parachute opening. And the parachute will be larger, for a slower descent, and... ho I'll keep the last improvement for the next post... ; )
@breakphreak @paramir: Thanks for the support guys ! VERY much appreciated !

Great idea! I think it would be better to use something like the Diana mini so that your rocket isn't so top heavy and it would also make it easier to protect the camera. I think your main problems came from the parachute. It opened on the way up every time. You could get a model rocket for relatively cheap that has all of the parachute stuff worked out.

    adash ·

So cool, unfortunately one really needs an HTML parser to read it.
I see you used a Holga, which is OK as far as the LOMO side is affected, but it allows only one shot. Maybe if you installed an automatic (also automatic film winding) camera with a timer as a remote control, that would produce lots of images and provide better photographic opportunity.
Those pranks are cheap now, and less popular among lomographers as they have no manual control and less distorted images, but can probably be wired to a simple (555 for example) timer to allow shooting every few seconds after launch.
