A shot into the past......

So, it was time to put the Christmas decorations away in the loft once more, but yikes! did we need some space, as somehow, even though they had some out of the attic, they would not go back in…. (our house is chock full) so… clean out time it was, and in the process we stumbled on something rather nice. My grandfathers camera.

My father remembers his father using it often, mostly to take slides, as granddad owned a building company, and took slides of the finished work as well as family photos. So, what with my interest in all things film and camera wise, it had come to me. And so I just had to take it our the first chance I had. It does need a new case, as the one it is in is damaged, and i don’t want to risk it getting further cracks, and so looking around I managed to get one off ebay for just £9.00, which was a small price to pay for a new-ish case.

As I love to test multiple things if I can, I also took the Lomo Cine400 film for a spin, as I do have a bit of tungsten fetish, and I was sprized by both the camera and the film. The Vitoret has no light meter, and so I went out on a cold sunny mid morning and shot the same photos a few times on different settings, to see what I got and how it affected things.

Though I think the film was a little over exposed over all, as I erred on the side of too much light rather than not enough, and my developer was a little bit dodge, as it’s getting towards the end of its shelf life, I was pleasantly surprised by the photos, and what it taught me.

Firstly, the camera is best set on 125 rather than 60 for its shutter speed, as you do get a little camera shake at 60 still. Second, Cine400 changes colour depending on the exposure, which is quite cool. Colour wise it reminded me of the fujichrome MS 100/1000 film. but the film also had a mild to vivid rainbow effect much like the Kolor film from Revlon in places.

Mostly, it was nice to step into my grandfathers shoes for a bit, he died when I was very young, so I never got to know him, and having this new connection to him is heartwarming.

These photos show the change in colour due to exposures.
