Oddly enough a certain part of my interest in photography began through sociological research, and the inevitable question of the realness of the photographic image. A photograph may depict something real, but in the passage from the real, via the composition created by the photographer, the depiction on film (or sensor, via a scanner, the editing software), to a completed image, does a photograph become a Baudrillardian simulacrum – a simulation of something that has become so far from the reality that the reality can no longer said to exist..?
